There is actually no such thing as atheism.

If I ask the Pope "Do you believe in Zeus?" and he says "No," does that make him an atheist? How about if he denies belief in Shiva the Destroyer or Thor the God of Thunder?

To be an atheist, you would have to consider and deny every possible variation of "God." Since among the almost infinite variations there are many that the human mind can't begin to comprehend, it is impossible to consider and deny each one, and therefore literally impossible to be an atheist.

With respect to the Christian God alone I'm sure there are thousands of variations that are constantly evolving. The Christian God of 1430 is not the Christian God of 2004. And the Christian God of 2050 will not be the same as the Christian God of today.

The question of whether God exists is pointless. The real question is, if God does exist, what is the nature of God.
