It wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't just a matter of deer becoming more accustomed to being around people as their populations in residential areas increase. A couple of months ago, one was standing in my front yard, about 20 feet from a bay window, watching me through the glass for a couple of minutes before slowly wandering off. Even if I'm outside when they notice me, they often just casually stroll away and only bolt if I make a noise or move toward them.
