Hey, Claps, tell me about the new Lionel stuff. How does it compare to what we had/ have now?

I was surprised at the quality of the new set.

The new steam locomotive is actually heavier than
my 30 year old steamer. It has a bit more detail,
too. Has a little Santa at the wheel waving to the
kids.

It also has a technological edge over the old set.

The new transformer has a button that I can press
that makes the train whistle. (It sends a signal
to the coal car that has some sort of air whistle
that makes a nice choo-choo sound.

There is another car that plays holiday music when
switched to the ON position. It is electronic
sounding and a bit loud so it probably won't get too
much air play...

There is another car that has a gear fixed to the
wheels. As the wheels turn it makes an elf chase a
reindeer all around the car in a loop. Pretty cool.

The new locomotive also accepts a few drops of this
special liquid that causes it to send up little puffs
of smoke.

I think the old locomotive used to take some sort of
pellets to do that.

The old set had a lot of memories attached to it though.
The coal car makes a cool sounding chugga-chugga sound
as it begins rolling.

The new set had a better track system. The rails are
the same width so the old trains fit. However, the old
tracks do not mate with the new ones.

This is what it looks like.

Someday perhaps the kids and I will try to incorporate the
two sets on a sheet of plywood and creat a little village,
etc complete with a tunnel through the mountain and a bridge.

I remember watching the Addams Family thinking he had the
coolest train set I ever saw.

...and then he'd blow up the erector set bridge with
dynamite as the train crossed.

Anyhow, my old set is only 30 years old.
Your old set is probably all metal cars and locomotive.
You can still get replacement parts for them in case the
electric motor or lights don't work. My hobby shop still
sells the old track and accessories.

Here are some beauties:

You might find one like yours.
