10:32 AM Sprint and Nextel in Merger Talks

The market was headed south yesterday after a few earnings warnings from chip companies and oil prices rising, but rumors of a potential merger in the telecommunications sector may have saved the day. Sprint (NYSE:FON) and Nextel Communications (NASDAQ:NXTL) are in negotiations to merge in what would be a $30-billion deal. The telecom sector has been one of the most disliked sectors by analysts over the past few quarters. Out of 290 total ratings, there are 95 "buy" ratings, 152 "hold" ratings, and 43 "sell" ratings. Out of the 28 sectors that we track, only three sectors have a lower percentage of "buy" ratings and only four sectors have more "sell" ratings.
