Taking something that is well known and sacred and lumping it in with things that are quaint or weird does more to isolate "Christians" than the parade organizers.

That is an interesting observation, but Christians asked to be included in this parade along side the quaint weirdos and were denied. Everyone was free to attend the parade and observe the celebration. Christians were basically told to practice their right to free speech only in specific places, like their homes or Churches, and excluded from participating.

I've been googling this all morning, and found lots of discussion, which I knew would be taking place, and good for that. Thought you'd be interested in reading a few.
