If GLD could not buy physical for some reason (snowstorm / transit strike in New York prevents delivery) they might want to have the option to buy/sell futures in Chicago, London etc. to keep the price and the NAV of gold in alignment. I have looked through parts of mutual fund prospectuses and found similar clauses for pretty conventioanl funds.
