"Why should anyone outside the US be excited by gold?"...The Vietnamese are.

I am in a monthly dinner group with several guys, and friends often bring friends. nine months ago a young vietnamese doctor showed up with a fascinating story.

when he was a boy, his family fled the communists. his parents put the whole family on a boat. the only currency the boat captain would accept was gold, and fortunately his father had the family's life savings in it.

I don't remember where the boat was headed, but a few days out to sea the boat lost its motor. everyone in the family except the young boy died while the boat was adrift. the boat was found and the boy ended up in a resettlement camp in the middle of the pacific (again, I don't remember the island). an aunt had previously made it to the united states, so they arranged for their nephew to come to the US. he went to high school where his aunt lived, and he was offered a full scholarship to an ivy league school. because a slightly lesser but still prestigious school agreed to pay for occasional trips home to see his aunt, he turned down the ivy league offer.

after graduation, he took out student loans to attend medical school, and he is now starting life in my community as a plastic surgeon, doing breast augmentations and tummy tucks.

the guy told a fascinating story, and he is incredibly nice.

this wonderful success story was made possible by his father's putting all of his family's life savings in gold.
