The bit I am not clear on is why MSSearch needs to be called. Can you not construct a table which includes the message text as the major column with the thread id,author as the primary key ? That way you can reduce searches to just a one thread table.

A way can be written to get around MSSearch, but it's not easy and has a few drawbacks. It's a possibility if the next version of SQL Server doesn't.

Most searches aren't thread-specific, though, so making separate tables for all the threads wouldn't be worthwhile. The performance for a thread-specific search would be incredible, but at the cost of having about 30k separate tables and catalogs hanging around, all of which would need frequent updating.

And if it were tried without MSSearch (using LIKE instead) the performance would be extremely poor on many threads.

thread id,author as the primary key

Thread id/author wouldn't be unique, which a primary key must be.
