We have lost every trade war (five as of now) against los americanos since 1850. Whole areas of Canada lost their way of life (i.e. Southern Ontario linen) whence the US won their right to dump products northward, and banned the southern flow of suchlike. The laws of economics say they will always win, as their domestic market is more robust, and allows greater volume and lower costs. They always act unilaterally and in their own favour at the expense of their trading partners. This is not unique amongst countries.0

The primary reason that maple leaf timber was so low on US shelves was that their dollar was flying against the loonie. Since that has changed the problem of government subsidies has all subsided.

What the US fails to miss is that strong tariffs and protected subsidized industries always lead to higher prices, not lower. Industries that are subsidized or protected have no incentive to lower prices. (Corn Laws of Great Britain) Once the Brits had corn tariffs reduced, they could eat again. Starvation disappeared. Chalk one up for Robert (Re) Peel. (He did not accept the idea until the end of his term)

Only recently the US steel industry begged for lower tariffs on foreign steel. As strong manufacturers the steel industry suffered more from the higher prices that tariffs brought than they would have from cheap foreign raw product.

The US Steel industry got its way and tariffs were dropped. But wood is not steel. The manufacturers or builders are not a strong lobby. They are big in total consumption and output, but not strongly unified under one umbrella. And them that are, are not calculating the costs to their consumers, or losing business. It's a captive market. They just pass the costs on.

Between beef and wood, Canada has lost billions. Maybe if they stopped bitching about Iraq, and dropped these meaningless and useless trade barriers, we would send them over some happy meals.

Nobody is to blame. The Americans are not just a bunch of mindless corrupt bureaucrats or arrogant uncaring businessmen. The forces that drive them to consume and dominate are just the forces of money and business that drive the rest of us too. There is precious little consideration amongst any of us about ethics and reality when the buck is dragged through our trailer park. The reality is, it is the only buck in town and if we are not quick and dive for it, we will miss it. Damn where it is connected. It is all the same.

Idealists and altruists die broke.

So where does US wealth come from? They are not more efficient, and nor do their products in general exceed others in quality or efficiency. So why are they rich? Greater natural resource base? Nope. It's their magic dollar. More on that later. From Mr. No-Gold Keynes hisself.
