I don't see blaming Giuliani for Kerik's nanny problem. Kerik hasn't been hiding under a rock -- we've all seen many, many political nominations go down in flames because of the illegal immigrant servant problem.

What I can't understand is why anybody with political ambitions would put themselves into that situation -- and if they got into it unwittingly, at least make the effort to repair it. Which probably would be just paying back due payroll taxes, interest and penalties. Embarrassing, but not deadly.

If they paid cash under the table for a lengthy period of time, that indicates a disrespect for the law which is troublesome. It's one thing to pay the guy who mows your lawn cash, he's arguably an independent contractor. Ditto for the lady who comes once a week to clean. In fact, you can hire them through cleaning services, which makes it 100% clear that they are independent contractors.

But the lady who comes to your house every day to baby-sit your kids is an employee.
