Chile's Government to Propose Mining Royalty, Diario Reports
2004-12-13 08:13 (New York)

By Igor Munoz
Dec. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Chile's government today may send a
revised bill to congress to tax mining companies, newspaper El
Diario said, citing people close to the process whom it didn't
identify.
Mining Minister Alfonso Dulanto, Finance Minister Nicolas
Eyzaguirre and Presidential Secretary Eduardo Dockendorff will
present the royalty bill to congressional leaders at 12:30 p.m.
in Santiago, and the government would submit the proposal
immediately provided the leaders have no objections, the
newspaper said.
Congress in August blocked a 3 percent tax on mining sales.
The new proposal may impose a levy of 3.5 percent on profits, the
newspaper reported, without saying who provided the information.
Chile is the world's biggest copper producer.
