Jack,

Its real popular to pile on Walmart at the moment. However in doing so I see lots of slurs, but few facts. There are a lot of myths and probably some truths, but no reliable studies are being quoted.

Why do we only look at part-time cashiers? Why not store managers, distribution center workers etc.

A good example of the bias is the recent serious attacks on Walmart. One article, which I can't place at the moment, decried local government tax incentives to attract a Walmart Distribution Center. It then went on to discuss wage issues at a retail outlet. Nothing was stated about the employment or wages at the Distribution Center itself. Probably because it would have provided the reason for the incentives and been counter to the attack the reporter was writing.

When discussing the authors predicted decline of small town downtowns - he never indicates what pay and benefits looked like at the old 5 and Dime.
