When discussing the authors predicted decline of small town downtowns - he never indicates what pay and benefits looked like at the old 5 and Dime.

I thought that was an old issue. Walmart started out in small towns where the denizens, red people, bemoaned that it wiped out their business district. It took out the five and dime, the tire store, the hardware store, the dress shop, the card store, etc. and left boarded up storefronts behind. That was a very long time ago. Now Walmart is in the burbs. Whatever Main Streets it wiped out were a decade or two ago. Now the issues with Walmart are blue issues. Funny how that changed. I'd love to see someone do a retrospective on the Walmart vs. the small town issue. Are they better off or worse off now?

My home town Main Street is all antique shops. That started when I was still living there four decades ago and discount department stores started being built out on "the highway." I just heard news in the last couple of months that Walmart is moving into space that was once a chemical plant, right in town although off Main Street. We've come nearly full circle.
