What is missing now is not so much the portfolio function, which is available everywhere, but the “make open to the public” portfolio election. We could all migrate 2005 Contest portfolios to Yahoo, but no one could see them without a person’s handle and password. I just did a quick Google search of free portfolio trackers and none would seem to have this “open to the public without a password” feature.
I think we can solve the problem but the solution will be cumbersome and have more admin time associated with it. Because the contest raises real money and is fun, and is the one time some outstanding SI investors kinda sorta open up albeit in a contrived 12-month contest with high moral hazard, I believe it would be worth the extra work to preserve the fun factor and I am more than willing to share some of the load.
Proposal:
We all do Yahoo, I am sure, so lets stick with what works. Every contestant would fill out a Yahoo 2005 contest portfolio on time, with shares purchased, price, etc. just like SI. Contestants would have to copy the data input into his/her Y! 2005 contest portfolio to this thread (or to a trusted SI member--see below--by PM), as well a clear, readable table in uniform format. 5 trusted volunteers (assuming we get, say, 35 contestants) would take 7 contestant portfolios each and put them on their own Y! accounts (anyone know if there is a limit over there?). Every month, the 5 trusted volunteers are to post the results of the 7 portfolios they “follow”. One most trusted SI volunteer could quickly input the monthly data on a Xcell spreadsheet, rank by performance and then post the leader/laggard board. It would be very helpful if the link to the contestant’s original post were included in the leader/laggard post so viewers could easily see, with just a little extra work, what individual stocks contributed to performance.
Thus, we would need 6 volunteers.
