we need to make it easier, not harder, for parents to keep control over what children are exposed to

I agree that it would be better if kids were not exposed to such crap.

I have been posting for the last few days about courtesy in the context of saying "Happy Holidays." I have been charging the Christian-absorbed with being piggish in their airing of their messages cavalierly without concern for within the sound of their voices or sight of their behaviors. In the course of that commentary I mentioned other courteous behaviors including looking behind to make sure the door you're letting go of will not smack someone else in the face and not wearing a t-shirt with a risque message where kids might be present. I would suggest as a remedy a campaign to get people to voluntarily be respectful of the presence of kids in their behavior. That may sound too much like "it takes a village" for some people but it's value based, voluntary, and "horizontal," which should appeal to the right. But just as the Christian-centric are being piggish, so is the trendy crowd, which also acts like others in the community aren't there or don't deserve any consideration.

I have nothing against parental control. That's a tack that's being taken now with some success. Parental control, when manifested as school segregation, has its downside, though. As you mentioned, there's the 6000 year old earth problem. Plus it does nothing to improve the overall culture, just suboptimizes the "ghettos" that the Christian-centric claim to want to avoid.
