Don't be so hard on your own self, you didn't know! There's lots of stuff people give animals that they shouldn't because they just didn't know any better. One thing a vet should do with every pet owner is give 'em a list of things that can harm 'em on their very first visit. Most don't and they get upset when an owner does something like what you did. How you gonna know if no ones tells you? I think it's their responsiblity as a professional to inform their patients.
