Joint Family ownership is already happening - However many counties are voting to discourage that. For example in my county they recently passed a law (or whatever you call it) which does not allow for a full fledged kitchen in the basement. You cannot rent out a fully finished walk out basement. The only people who can stay with you are your blood relatives.

So technically you can rent it out to your brother's family but will have to use the same kitchen - in other words truly Joint Family joined to the hip err.. Kitchen.
