"Joint Family ownership of homes is no joke- that is what it takes to afford a house these days. The house on the corner across the street from me is home to 3 families (their cars take up the whole street!). My brother in law and his wife rents from my sister in law and her family so they could afford the monthlies."

It's very common here. It started to become very prevalent about three years ago. The feds have recently approved mortgages for new home buyers for two unrelated households.
