Tim, logic seems to be doing mathematics with words

Something similar to that, or with symbols to represent the abstract relationships without the possibility of confusion caused by things like different meanings of the same word. Of course to apply the logic back in to the real world and make actual arguments using it you probably do have to use language. Defining your terms than becomes important. If two people are using different meanings for the same words than they will likely just talk past each other.

A recent example of this on SI involved the term "banned from schools". One person was arguing that military recruiters shouldn't be banned from schools, another person basically called the 1st person an idiot because the military recruits in a lot of schools. The 1st person used "banned from schools" to mean "banned from some schools" or "banned from any schools". The 2nd person used the same term to mean "banned from all schools". So they continued to talk past each other. I pointed this out to the 2nd person but it really didn't do any good. Maybe they both (or at least the 2nd person) already knew that they where using the terms differently but wanted to continue to do so for rhetorical purposes.
