If not for the fact that you live in a rent subsidized apartment, you would not make it on 65K/year, not if you had to spend 60% of your wages on a free market rate apartment.

65K in NY area is "slavery". You pay your rent, car rental, taxes, insurance, little bit of food and there is nothing left.

Yes, we have been tightening up lately,....but by no means do we live anywhere near poverty

Does it mean that if you had not tightened a bit, you would have bought a 10K watch instead of a 5K one ?
