I was listening to business radio in LA today and they were taking calls regarding this merger. There were Nextel customers who were concerned about how this would affect their current service. But there were far more Sprint customers, or rather former Sprint customers, and they absolutely hated Sprint. Bad customer service. Billing errors. Cheap equipment.

If Sprint was an excellent company with happy customers there would still be problems with merging two systems running incompatible technology. Not to mention the usual problems with combining two corporate cultures. I would also expect that a number of good employees would take the opportunity to move on instead of waiting to see if they survive the merger.

Sprint doesn't appear to be an excellent company with happy customers. The new company is going to have to spend money to come up with a common technology. I suspect that the new company is likely to end up with Sprint's customer service rather than Nextel's, and will at least be tainted with Sprint's reputation until it proves otherwise.
