It is amazing how people can seriously suggest repeating the Iraqi debacle.

Its the beer talking. The odds of the U.S. attacking Iran in the next four years are close to zero, if for no other reason that we don't have enough troops for the task. Iran has a significantly larger population than Iraq and a society that is more cohesive and sophisticated. A very tough nut to crack. While Iran has done more to support terrorism against the U.S. than Iraq ever did, we have chosen to ignore that fact because, as I said, it is a very tough nut to crack. It may be wishful thinking but I have high hopes that Iran will eventually liberalize. It may take a decade or two....

WARNING, A FLIPPANT COMMENT TO FOLLOW

Anyway, we can just delegate the problem to Israel. I'm sure that they have kept their maps updated.

You might find this book interesting:

"All the Shah's Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror" by Stephen Kinzer

amazon.com

It is an account of the U.S. supported coup that brought Mossadegh down in 1953. Not one of our better moments.

Kinzer also wrote "Bitter Fruit: The Story of the American Coup in Guatemala." Do we see a trend here? Actually, the book was fairly well balanced. Kinzer is a long time New York Times correspondent.

I intend to beef up my reading on Iran. There was a second article that was linked to your post that referenced a book by Robin Wright that looked interesting. I realize that Ms. Wright is not one of your favorite people. A couple of days ago I ordered a copy of Kenneth Pollock's "Persian Puzzle":

I am willing to hazard the guess that this book is not on your reading list.
