Well, two ways to evaluate things are short-run and long-run. In the short run, it is always easier to thumb your nose at the world and treat people like irrelevant dirt, carrying on as you see fit and kicking people in the groin if they get in your way. In the short run, that works. In the long run, when you wake up to reality and realize that your power is indeed very limited in this big, complex world, you get things done through people. You build teams. You build coalitions. You lead and if you are successful then people will follow. All of this of course takes some time and skill and effort. So in the short term this is never attractive. But before long, the long term starts to come around the corner, and you find yourself isolated, under attack, vulnerable and frustrated by your inability to move forward, or even to hold your ground -- then you wish you had taken the long view. The Bush Administration has NEVER taken the long view -- and it probably never will.
