In the days following 9/11, Cheney went out to our allies and pre-viewed the emerging Bush policy -- unilateral US attack -- and when the leaders of the world rejected that approach, as they must reject any such move towards US dictating to the world, then the groin kicking began. It became the mantra "you are with us or you are with the terrorists". And it alienated the world. Next to come into the cross-hairs was the UN -- which was told to get behind US policy or become "irrelevant". Short-run, short-run, short-run all the way to Iraq. Then, it was knock out Saddam and worry about the consequences later. Now it is later, and we are essentially alone, having accomplished almost nothing, and with major setbacks in the war on terror, not to mention a lot of fine young men and women to bury. And the future looks bleak. The long-run did not take long to arrive.
