Then I started to hear disturbing things - that the Bush team saw a draft of the Arab governance report and objected to the prologue, because it was brutally critical of the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the Israeli occupation. This prologue constitutes some 10 percent of the report. While heartfelt, it's there to give political cover to the Arab authors for their clear-eyed critique of Arab governance, which is the other 90 percent of the report

I don't know about you, but I am mighty sick of the bilge that even Arab reformers have to put in the front of everything they write to prove they are team players - "It's the Crusaders' fault! It's the Jews fault! We're innocent victims! None of it is our fault!" Only later do they dare sidle up to the notions of responsibility or reform.

If they've been shaken enough to begin talking about reform, maybe a little more shaking can get them to abandon culture of loving the strong man ruler and of blaming everybody else for their troubles.

And don't fall over yourself giving any credit to the Bush administration for this post 2001 change, Tom.
