Virus on my spouse's computer(Windows XP)! Norton finds virus named bloodhound (?)

- Of course, Norton anti-virus expired 11/03/04 ... When our ISP changed servers spouse had problems and the Tech support person said uninstall Zone Alarm Pro!(???) Now computer was running without updated anti-virus and firewall! :^(

- During this past month, my spouse tried to renew Norton. He clicked on the Norton link and a window popped up .... he bought the item ($59.99 + $9.99 shipping & handling).

- Unfortunately for my spouse, the popup was not Norton, but Inkglobal.com, courtesy of spyware or a virus on his computer! Fortunately, there is a 60-day guarantee so he will only be out $9.99 plus whatever postage is required to return the CD to Inkglobal.com.

AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Now the fun begins!

To find a solution I did a

+ Google search
google.com

and ...

opened the following links returned in the Google search:

+ Trojan Horse Virus - Bloodhound Trojan Virus
trojan-virus.com
This site has lots of links to anti-virus/computer healthy sites!

Re: It's really bad!!!

If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, you'll need to disable System Restore. Instructions can be found here. pchell.com

Run Windows Disk Cleanup, emptying Temporary files, Temporary Internet files, and Recycle Bin.

Download and run Stinger from vil.nai.com

Run an online scan at pandasoftware.com

or

housecall.trendmicro.com

In either online scan select Auto-clean.

Once your machine is clean, you can re-enable System Restore.

And UPDATE your Norton Anti-virus.

Hope this helps.

If you're on Windows XP and don't have any firewall installed then at
least turn on the XP firewall:

Read both of these pages BEFORE doing any cleaning of virus.

Only Norton labels unknown viruses "bloodhound" and therefore ever finds one.

securityresponse.symantec.com

You may want to scan with this which could find the virus with another name, then re-scan with Norton to see if that same bloodhound thing is still there.

- I renewed Norton Anti-Virus and scanned computer.

- A Norton scan returned a virus identified as W32.Randex.E

- Next, I reinstalled Zone Alarm Pro (ZA) and restarted the computer.

- On startup, a window popped up Power Scan 1.1. I did not run that program; shut it down and Googled Power Scan 1.1 ... SPYWARE!

- What a mess! Zone Alarm started asking permission for multiple programs to access the Internet -- winlog.exe, power scan 1.1, salm.exe, bargain.exe, and many more programs that somehow had been installed on the computer!

- Symantec Security Response - W32.Randex.E

- For starters, I Google several of the programs ZA asked about. A search for winlogin.exe, salm.exe, etc. informed me they are spyware installed most likely by a virus.

What Does it Do?
180Search Assistant is generally installed by some other piece of spyware. This not only displays ads but logs your browsing habits to send back to 180! If you have this you most likely have several other programs that you need to uninstall.
