Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo announced today that it has achieved high-speed packet transmission 1Gbps in the downlink in a laboratory experiment using 4G mobile radio access equipment. The lab trial took place on August 20 and DoCoMo is now considering field experiments for early next year.

The operator said the 4G equipment employs variable-spreading-factor spread OFDM radio access and multiple-input-multiple-output multiplexing techniques, achieving 1Gbps data transmission with 100MHz bandwidth in the downlink. DoCoMo said it achieved 100Mbps and 20Mbps data rate transmission in the downlink and uplink respectively in outdoor tests moving at speeds of about 30km/h.

DoCoMo is currently conducting indoor tests in preparation to develop a 4G global standard in coordination with the International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector. In Japan, the telecommunications council of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is overseeing efforts to develop technologies for 4G commercial services by 2010.
