You may be partly right about the Baathists, Sunnis and Shi'ites and their individual agendas.

But, basically, most Middle Easterners are distrustful of Americans and Jews! They think that Americans are in bed or in cahoots with the Jews and vice versa. Indeed, Bush has been dubbed a "Jewish lackey."

All the propaganda about deposing Saddam and liberating Iraqis from cruelty and tyranny and how great it is to introduce democracy in the Middle East certainly sound very noble and appealing to westerners. However, most Middle Easterners do see more beyond the facade of it. They see westerners plotting and actively attempting to exploit Middle Easterners.

In case you haven't grasped it yet, democracy is an alien concept for Middle-East folks in general and getting them to embrace it is very much like pulling teeth. Remember that for a seed to germinate and become a viable plant, it must first of all have all the right conditions. Have you ever tried planting a "durian" or a "mangosteen" tree in your backyard outside of a gargantuan greenhouse?

BTW, for many years in the past, China was condemned for not being a democratic country. It still isn't! In spite of that, it is functioning well! And the US and others have stopped lambasting it!

Why? Because it is not in their best interests to antagonize China at this time? Because the China of today is no longer the military weakling that could be bullied and exploited as it was in the 1800s? Because it can quite easily embarrass or bloody the nose of anyone who would ask for it? You tell me.

Iraq was invaded because it was believed to be a cinch and the prize (OIL) to be had is the industrial lifeblood of the west!

BTW, has the born-again-Christian Bush and his henchmen forgotten a couple of their God's commandments:

"Thou shalt not bear false witness....."
(in connection with propagating mass deception about Iraq's WMDs), and

"Thou shalt NOT covet thy neighbour's goods"?
(goods here = OIL and MINERALS)

.
