The word "niggardly" seems to hit the national radar screen every couple of years. In 1999 an aide to the mayor of Washington D.C. temporarily lost his job for using the word and a few years later a fourth-grade teacher was sent for some sensitivity training.

What is the big deal? If you are smart enough to know the meaning of the word and know how to use it for its nuance, then you should be smart enough to know that if you used the word on even black people that know the definition, they would most likely be uncomfortable when a person of another race uses the word in thier presence.

I am sure Colin Powell, Condaleeza Rice, Nelson Mandela all know the meaning of the word. I am also quite sure they would feel uncomfortable if someone of another race used the word in their presence - even if it was meant in a situation where it was appropriate - definitionwise.

Anyone that is so insensitive to the feelings of others, and demand that we accept the usage of the word, deserve anything bad that happens to them when they insist on using the word.

I also think that people who think themselves being very smart for knowing the definition of word and insist on using it when they think is appropriate - have other issues in their psychological makeup beside racism.
