RE: "Until recently, just about every device with a cord or battery under the Christmas tree came from a company based in Japan, China or somewhere else overseas."

Oh, but I thought Elroy said he wasn't aware of any Chinese consumer product?

Hint#1: take a look at what happened to Japan's market share vs China on many of the product lines in consumer land.

Hint#2: take a look at when it happened
==> i.e. during what phase of the product life cycle

Hint#3: consider the formula China used to do it, and more importantly, when they used it (i.e. again, during what phase of the product lifecycle is the formula successful and why.)

Then consider the phase of today's consumer products mentioned here, and then ask yourself, since it happened to Japan, why wouldn't it happen to the USA, given the mapping of the stages are identical. Then ask yourself, when would the formula eeked out by China (that cost Japan) be the right time to be applied to the mentioned USA products (again, when in the lifecycle).
