Warning about Composite Technology Corp. (CPTC.OB)...

I am not suggesting that anyone consider buying this stock. I was just using it as an example to illustrate the energy-related uses of carbon fiber. The company's products are new, innovative, and undergoing trial demonstrations at various sites. But the electric utility industry is quite conservative, and may be very slow to adopt these products. The stock price seems caught up in a frenzy that could end badly.

OTOH, Zoltek (ZOLT) has proven products. But the company's mission is to build the business by ramping volume, cutting prices, and pushing the product into new markets. Although Zoltek has some patents, it seems ultimately to be a commodity business. I own some ZOLT and might buy more, but I'm not making any big bets on it.

More than anything, I'm excited by carbon fiber because I like disruptive new technology like this. I'd sure love to have a carbon-fiber, hybrid-electric, rechargeable, fuel-efficient car that goes from zero to 60 in 4 seconds!
