Because many of the culturally neutral attractive features are also a sign of good health and reproductive fitness. Symmetrical features are definitely one of those. The other innately human quality of "if a little is good, a lot is better" leads to things like foot binding, those african women with the rings that stretch their necks and breast implants the size of watermelons. The fact that most of these techniques are performed on women is an indication of their relative status.
