If we had left Saddam in place, he would have kept the lid on sectarian violence (and the possibility of a religious state) for as long as he lived. When he died, I think there would have been mayhem- I doubt there would have been a peaceful transfer of power- but at least the US would not have been at fault for causing the chaos, as we are now. We were foolish to step in and break so completely, the already damaged state of Iraq.

The Shiites have a justifiable desire to redress their years as a majority who were kept from power by brute force; the Suni have an understandable desire not to face retribution, and I don't see how the matter can be solved peacefully. It was sheer folly to send Americans there to die, for whatever it is this week we are supposed to be fighting for. It clearly won't be democracy, and it won't be a friend for the US in the ME, and it isn't supposed to be oil- so goodness knows what the point of those lost lives is. It shouldn't make sense to anyone, but apparently some people support it so much they want to send even more troops. What a waste of good young lives, imo.
