There's a couple of separate issues as I see it.

Is debt a pernicious influence that the Christian should be wary of?? Sure. It is easy to becom enslaved to debt.

Is it wrong for the Christian to use borrowed funds under any circumstance?? No.

I need to review the subject -- but I think the taking advantage by the creditor; the one who does the enslaving is more thoroughly condemned in the Bible than the debtor.

That said -- I think you are right, that many ARE enslaved, not only by debt -- but by the underlying materialism which hooks them into it.

And how bout the influence of mass media on Christians on a ton of issues -- you've pointed out the war -- all the sound bite issues of the campaign -- moral issues -- are almost a sideshow, compared to the really important day to day issues that some Christians accept and go on their way.

One passage that is a little different comes from Habakkuk -- a passage I am not sure I understand -- but I think the whole book is getting ready to be a book that will have abundant application for America soon -- how can a more wicked nation be allowed to punish God's people:

6"Will not all of these (N)take up a taunt-song against him,
Even mockery and insinuations against him
And say, '(O)Woe to him who increases what is not his--
For how long--
And makes himself rich with loans?'



7"Will not your creditors (P)rise up suddenly,
And those who collect from you awaken?
Indeed, you will become plunder for them.



8"Because you have (Q)looted many nations,
All the remainder of the peoples will loot you--
Because of human bloodshed and violence done to the land,
To the town and all its inhabitants.

The simple white hat / black hat mentality that has set in in the US is almost comical, if it weren't so sad.
