Croc, I use Windows XP and, yes, I know that Mac users never have any problems ... :)
I don't know the source of the popups. When I log in to AOL (my ISP), the ads will begin streaming in after a few minutes whether I click on a website or not, so it would seem that they're embedded in the AOL software. Usually it will be a quick stream of 5-10 or more ads that have icons that show up on the blue bar at the bottom of the screen. Fortunately they're easily removed -- right-click on the icon and then left-click on Close in the small popup that appears. But they're very rude creatures, interrupting and blocking whatever I'm doing at the moment they appear -- really disgusting. I have the AOL popup blocker fully engaged, but it's of no help. I'm wondering if there are any ISPs that guarantee to be free of popups -- if so, it would be worth the effort to change ISPs.
A techie-acquaintance recommended running AdAware, which worked very well for awhile, but eventually the popups found their way around AdAware and it's no longer effective when I run it.
Funny, but I haven't had a single popup since reading Rambi's Sunday tale earlier this morning. Perhaps her story sent the popups away in a state of bewilderment? :) |
