I believe I remember erosion-of-freedom issues under Nixon, and really, really dirty tricks under Reagan (that Iran-Contra mess was a real doozy). I am wracking my brain trying to remember if there were such issues under Clinton, though. Were there? I mostly remember the blue dress.

I think 9/11 is the beginning of the worst erosion, because it is a stark date, not just a gradual slide, and because everything after that is different than what was before. I think the Bush administration took advantage of the national trauma and jacked up everyone's fears and systematically exploited the event and the neocons took ran wild, and now America is a dark place doing horrible deeds and we are all losing our rights. Just my opinion, of course!
