Poll Finds Majority of Public, For First Time, Say Iraq
Conflict Not Worth Fighting

NEW YORK A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows that, for the first, a majority of America have concluded that, given its costs, the conflict in Iraq is "not worth fighting."
This total of 56% is eight points higher than last summer.
The same poll found that the public, by 52% to 35%, want to give Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld his walking papers.
While a slight majority believe the invasion of Iraq war contributed to the long-term security of the United States, 70 percent of Americans think these gains have come at an "unacceptable" cost in military casualties.
Nevertheless, the public is still sending conflicting signals.
A solid 58 percent continue to support keeping military forces in Iraq until "civil order is restored." By a very slight margin, 48 percent to 44 percent, they agree with President Bush that the U.S. is making "significant progress" toward establishing democracy in Iraq.
Yet 58% believe Iraq is not ready for elections. Even so, 60% want those elections to go forward as scheduled. But 54% do not expect honest results.
The public splits on Bush's overall job performance, with 48 percent approving while 49 percent disapprove. By contrast, President Clinton had an approval of 60 percent in a poll taken just before he began his second term.
