if Micron had a core competency in NAND...

...(and I am not saying that they don't) why did they wait until 2005 to launch a flash product?

I havent been a close follower of Micron over the years, but it seems to me that they made a conscious decision to diversify away from DRAM in 2003. The first significant product was CMOS image sensors and they are now moving into NAND. I have no idea why this decision wasnt made earlier....perhaps NAND/image sensors werent big enough markets for them? From their statements, it seems that they plan on devoting between 5-10% (3000-5000 wafer outs a week) of their capacity to NAND, regardless of the comparative margins. After that, it will depend on the pricing environment.

I listened to a Micron presentation a couple of days ago, and it seemed to me that their answer regarding possible IPR problems in NAND flash has changed from earlier in the year. If I remember correctly, previously they had talked about the fact that they had a cross-license with Toshiba for NAND....this time they wouldnt answer the question. Perhaps Sandisk's lawsuit of STM has made them more wary?
