China to build methane and coal fuel power plant in Shanxi
By UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL

Published December 21, 2004

MANILA, Philippines -- The Asian Development Bank Tuesday agreed to a $117.4 million loan to help China build a power plant in Shanxi province using both methane and coal as fuel.

The power that is generated will be used for residential, commercial, and industrial purposes in the Jincheng area of the southern province.

Methane, a by-product of coal mining, is highly explosive, and capturing and using the gas to generate power will "reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming and climate change, increase clean fuel use by substituting methane for coal, improve coal mine efficiency, and result in cleaner air," the Manila-based ADB said.

The agency pointed out that the air quality in Shanxi is one of the worst in China, and includes one of the country's most polluted cities.

The project will also create 1,200 full-time jobs during construction and 845 positions will be available to keep the plant in operation.
