Beijing, Dec 21 (PTI) China today confirmed that the main purpose of its proposed anti-secession law is to crush Taiwan's bid for independence and asked the United States not to sabotage peace across the Taiwan Straits.

The law announced last Friday was proposed with "the sole purpose of containing Taiwan's splittist activities," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told reporters when asked to comment on the legislation.

Liu said it was meant to promote "the peace and stability of the Taiwan Straits and at some point the peaceful reunification" of the two sides which have been ruled separately since the end of a civil war in 1949.

His comments were the first time the Chinese government confirmed suggestions by Taiwanese and US officials and political analysts that Taiwan as the target of the legislation which is slated to be discussed by lawmakers at a session of the National People's Congress next week.

Taiwan says the new Chinese law could serve as a legal pretext for an attack on the island, which Beijing views as a rebel province that has to be reunified with the mainland, even by force.

Meanwhile, reacting sharply to the comments on the proposed legislation by a US State Department Spokesman, Liu urged Washington to support the Chinese legislative process and "not do anything that might add fuel to the Taiwan splittist activities." PTI
