Re: "clean coal" was one of John Kerry's positions in the recent presidential election. Like you, I'm rather dubious about the concept.

Bag houses work to keep particulate matter out of the air. And that is a very worthwhile air pollution control.

Where things get far fetched is when we start hearing about CO2 sequestration schemes. The idea of compressing CO2 and then storing it '20,000 Leagues Under The Sea' is just crackpot. It's a lot cheaper to plant a tree plantation.
