China develops first indigenous helium airship

Chinese aviation authorities on Wednesday approved a new indigenously developed and economical helium airship, ending foreign monopoly.

The HJ-2000 airship was granted flight licenses by the General Administration of Civil Aviation of China for two airborne vehicles, ending China's history of relying on imported manned airships, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The HJ-2000 airship is an airborne vehicle obtaining most of its lift from helium, a lighter-than-air gas, according to the local company that developed the airship.

The airship is light and can stay aloft for days at much lower cost than other aircraft. It will mainly be used for aerial advertising, photography, patrolling and environment monitoring, the company said.
