Or are you really so obtuse that you believe that somehow an imperfect and probably rigged election will magically "cure" Iraq of intolerance, religious radicalism, secular strife and hatred of American aggression. Ed
Let's see, first "Shock and Awe" was going to break the back of the Baathists. Then there were only maybe 4-5,000 of them actually fighting, so all we had to do was kill those "bad" guys and that would end the fighting. Then killing Saddam's sons would end it. Then capturing Saddam would end matters once and for all. Then "putting an Iraqi face" on the govt in June 2004 would end it--after all, as Condi said with such eloquence, the Iraqis don't like to be governed by foreigners. Now it's the elections that will end matters. I'm sure I'm forgetting some of the much touted turning points in this splendid little war (oh, wait, I forgot, that war happened a hundred years ago and ended with the multi-year Philippine sordid affair) that would once and for all break the backs of this insurgency that is foreign led, oh wait there's only a few hundred foreign fighters there, no it's financed by foreigners in Syria and Iran, yes, that's right, all we have to do is wag our fingers at those evil regimes and get them to stop financing matters and close their borders, and all will be well. Or Shock and Awe them, no one can stand up to the mighty US military. Oh and kill Zarqawi, that intrepid evil mastermind of all evil.
Right.
How many times have these people said something like, "In the next (x) months, we'll have Iraq under control. This uptick in violence is just a measure of how desperate they are, they know they're losing."
Someone should tell Contrack, who just gave up a $330m contract to get out of Iraq. Allawi should just point out to them that they can do their work in the 15 of 18 provinces that are oh so peaceful and grateful to the Americans for liberating them. |
