Just as there is pleasure in looking at pressed flowers, there is pleasure in looking at old photographs- even ones not related to you. I think it is even more fun when they ARE related, but I'm not sure it matters all that much. My mother in law gave me a box of family photos, many quite old, and some unlabled- one is a photo of a girl in a spanish costume, with a mantilla in her hair posed by a piano- who is she? we don't know. It's from around the 1880's, judging by her costume. Another photo is of an adorable baby, on a lambskin rug- looking as happy as can be. Then of course I have several coffin photos- which are so interesting. I found those in boxes of my grandmother's stuff, that my mother had stuck in the closet. I'd never ever seen them. Strange thing taking coffin photos- but it must have given comfort.

I remember my friend in Paraguay told me that when she was in the Peace Corps whenever there was a dead child the village had her come to the funeral so she could photograph the corpse. Often it would be the only photo the family had of the child. I suspect the same might be true of the people in my grandmother's collection- they were poor Germans- peasant immigrants. My father's family came from wealthy stock- and their photographs are very different, as are my husband's family's photos.
