BEIJING, China -- Chinese prosecutors have caught more than 42,000 officials for corruption and other offenses this year, state media reported Thursday.
In the period from January to November, the prosecutors netted 42,225 government employees, a rise of one percent from the same period last year, the Xinhua news agency said.

Graft was a major form of misbehavior, with prosecutors recovering a total of 3.8 billion yuan (460 million dollars) of misappropriated and embezzled funds during their investigations, according to the agency.

A total of 2,856 officials were at the county level or above, Xinhua reported.

In terms of corruption and transparency in government, China is roughly in the middle among the world's nations.

On a corruption scale covering 146 countries, drawn up by Berlin-based organization Transparency International, China shares 71st spot with Syria and Saudi Arabia.
