China mulls 22.5-km bridge linking Hainan island with mainland

BEIJING: China is considering building a 22.5-kilometre long bridge linking tropical Hainan island in its south to the mainland, state media reported.

Hainan is planning to initiate a feasibility study with a firm proposal to be handed to the Ministry of Communications for review no later than mid-2005, the China Daily said.

Wang Mi, section director of the Hainan Provincial Bureau of Communications, said the scale of investment required, the construction period and source of funds would be revealed at a later date.

Economists said a bridge would boost the island's economic development and help improve its investment climate, shortening the distance to Hong Kong which accounts for more than 60 percent of the total overseas investment in Hainan.

When another cross-sea bridge is built to connect China's Zhuhai Special Economic Zone with Hong Kong, it would take only three hours for vehicles from Hainan to Hong Kong, the newspaper said.
