Hi twfowler; Re: "The percentage of Palestinians that are actively against Israel is much greater then the percentages of Iraqis that are actively against the US. In terms of passive opposition pretty much all the Palestinians are against Israel while it is likely that at least many of the Shia will support the new government after the elections."

You guys were hopeful going in. I told you that the Iraqis would fight back with a will that far exceeded our ability to take the punishment. Here it is, 18 months on and sure enough, the Iraqis are dishing it out harder now than ever before.

Look back at your post. You didn't put a single number down. All you say is that the percentage of Palestinians actively against Israel is "much greater" than the percentage of Iraqis actively against the US. But you're not saying how much greater. What's the number?

But keep your pollyanna numbers. I saw the photos of the Iraqis celebrating the deaths of our soldiers. I understand the rising totals for our casualties. I know that you're simply hoping for a victory because that is all you know how to do.

My hope is that Bush will declare victory after the election, or that the elected Iraqi government will order us out of the country, and we can end the ignominious fiasco this spring.

Re: "I'm just pointing out that comparing the population of Iraq and Palestine isn't something that will be very useful in determing how difficult Iraq will be for here."

The whole reason this fiasco has been a fiasco is because people like you went into Iraq based on their feelings that it was going to be a "cakewalk". Then they got stuck based on their feelings that the war was about to turn around. If you understood numbers you'd understand how nasty the situation is.

Now here it is, 18 months on, and like I said before, like so many military men have said then and since, we did not have enough troops. Instead of going in and getting out in the summer of 2003, we now are setting new records for US troop deployments to Iraq.

The best we can hope for is to end up with an Iraq that hates the US about as much as Iran did back in 1991. Eventually, time will heal the wounds, but we've done far worse to Iraq than we ever did to Iran, so it could be some time.
