Pete,

"I wouldn't be quite so cavalier about it. There is some small chance (I have no idea of how to quantify it) of a catastrophic event"

I don't doubt that it can happen. Just about every error that can ever occur in the grand endeavor of human affairs has happened or, if given enough time, is likely to happen somewhere down the road. But, as you indicated the odds seem slight.

There are pessimists in the world who chronically worry about a giant meteorite striking the planet one day. Many reputable scientists have assured us that sooner or later this is going to happen...not might happen....will happen!

It's not that I choose to disbelieve them. I do. It simply has to do with a desire not to worry about things I can't change and try to live my life accordingly.

Of course, that meteorites might smash the planet or biological plagues, natural or manufactured, might infest the earth certainly make for interesting intellectual discussion, but I'm not going to get bent out of shape over it or lose my sense of humor about it....at least not until the sky darkens or my coughing and temperature reach critical levels. lol.

If thats 'cavalier' I am guilty as charged.
