First U.S. Smart Car Peddled on eBay Motors

WardsAuto.com, Dec 6 2004

Zap launched online bidding for its first U.S.-spec ForTwo on Dec. 2 and saw the asking price skyrocket to $27,100 on 47 bids in four days.

Zap is utilizing online auctioneer eBay Motors to sell the first federally compliant Smart ForTwo minicar for sale in the U.S.

The California-based electric vehicle distributor showed off the vehicle at the San Francisco International Auto Show in November and it has received an order from an unnamed U.S. auto dealer for a 100-unit block purchase of ForTwos, the only Smart vehicle Zap currently distributes.(See related story: Zap Receives 100-Unit Block Order for Smart)

Zap put the ForTwo on sale on eBay Dec. 2 and reports bidding hit $27,100 by Dec. 6. Bidding is scheduled to be open until the evening of Dec. 9 and the company has fielded 47 separate bids thus far.

Under a $10 million agreement forged with Smart-Automobile LLC, a privately held company that oversees the direct importation and modification of the vehicles to comply with U.S. standards, Zap has the rights to distribute 15,000 current-generation ForTwos annually for 10 years in the U.S. (See related story: Current Smart ForTwo U.S. Bound)
