EPA approves DCX Smart car for U.S.: The first of a ton of good alt-energy items in Tuesday's AutoTech Daily and AutoBeat Daily: First, both publications noted that DaimlerChrysler A.G.'s 60-mpg Smart coupe has been certified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, according to Santa Rosa, Calif.-based ZAP, which has an exclusive licensing agreement to sell the vehicles in the U.S. ZAP intends to begin selling the two-seater cars next spring. It says it will set up a network of 150 dealers -- with service departments -- and aims to sell 15,000 cars annually. The price: $15,000 to $20,000. ZAP, which has marketed electric bikes and neighborhood electric vehicles for 10 years, is displaying the tiny two-seater this week at the San Francisco auto show. The vehicles are being modified in Europe to meet U.S. safety regulations by Smart-Automobile L.L.C., which is expected to provide a two-year warranty for the cars. DCX plans to launch its larger Smart Formore small utility vehicle in the U.S. in 2006. But the company says it won’t compete with ZAP by selling the two-passenger Smart, known overseas as the “Fortwo,” in the U.S. DCX launched the Smart brand in Europe six years ago. The coupe is powered by a 61-hp three-cylinder turbocharged engine mated with a six-speed manual-automatic transmission. Other features include stability control and a steel-reinforced “safety cell” construction.
